Swabia

You have come to the Swabian Circle, which was geographically fragmented as it did not include the Habsburg territories of Swabian Austria, the member states of the Swiss Confederacy, or the Alsace region west of the Rhine, which belonged to the Upper Rhenish Circle. Despite this challenging physical structure, however, the Swabian Circle operated effectively.

The activities of the circle included financial support for its members in cases of emergency. In addition, the Swabian Circle was busy with the military defence of its regions against the French expansion of the late 17th century. This implied that all estates immediately subject to the Empire had to pay taxes to support the troops. However, this was not always easy when those territories were directly affected by the war. After 1694, the Swabian Circle could nevertheless maintain a joint army based at the Kehl fortress.
