This demo shows how to embed an interactive map into your adventure! A map can be fictional or represent real-world locations. In this sample, we are using a map of the early modern Holy Roman Empire, a complex political entity in continental Europe dissolved in 1806. The map shows the Empire, also commonly referred to as "Germany" at the time, divided into so-called imperial circles. The map was made by cartographer and engraver Herman Moll for the British market and printed in around 1736. The topic of the imperial circles is facinating as they served key functions from organising military defence to regulating currency on the level of trans-territorial collaboration.

However, German scholar Johann Jacob Moser noted in his book Von der Teutschen Crays-Verfassung ( Neues teutsches Staatsrecht, vol. 10, 1773, digitised print provided by the Bavarian State Library):

"Von der Teutschen Crays-Verfassung lässet sich nicht gar gut schreiben, weil es öffters an hinlänglichen Nachrichten ermangelt. Man siehet es auch mehrmalen nicht gerne, daß etwas davon herauskomme."
"It is not particularly easy to write about the constitution of the German Imperial Circles, as there is often a lack of sufficient information. Moreover, it is sometimes not well received when anything about it is published."

In the meantime, German historiography has been able to uncover many fascinating stories about the circles, and you can browse Moll's map to learn more! For navigation on the map, we are using the imperial coat of arms. By clicking on a destination button below, the map image recentres and takes you to the chosen location. In every description, you will also see highlighted place names over which you can hover to find them in the map image.
